2026 Worldwide Energy University Network Summer Geology Field Camp Inv...
The “Worldwide Energy University Network– Junggar Basin Summer Geology Field Camp” is an international geology-focused practical program hosted by China University of Petroleum-Beijing at Karamay (CUPK) – the Secretary-General unit of the Worldwide Energy University Network – with strong support from the China Scholarship Council (CSC). The program is open to international students (undergraduates, master's, and doctoral candidates) and early-career researchers with a background in geosciences. It also warmly welcomes domestic university students (undergraduates, master's, doctoral students, and early-career faculty), as well as frontline technical staff and management personnel from major oilfields. The registration period runs from today until July 1, 2026.The field location is the Junggar Basin, China's second-largest inland basin. Situated between the Altai Mountains and the Tianshan Mountains in an irregular triangle, the basin hosts a wealth of diverse and typical geological phenomena. Along the southern and northwestern margins alone, more than 30 classic geological teaching routes have been developed, including but not limited to sections illustrating the three major rock types, lithostratigraphic sections, structural geology sections, and a complete ophiolite suite section. In 2026, we have significantly upgraded the program based on previous years: we have invited three distinguished experts — Professor Ji Youliang, Professor Xiao Jianxin, and Professor Zhao Guochun, and Outstanding Dr. Li Yang from Chinese Academy of Sciences — to participate fully throughout the program. Newly added routes include the Darbut Ophiolite Suite (covering serpentinite, gabbro, pillow basalt, chert, and greenschist, providing a complete view of the paleo-Asian oceanic crust remnants), the Baiyang Modern Alluvial Fan (applying the principle of “the present is the key to the past”), and the Wuerhe Dinosaur Route (the Lower Cretaceous Tugulu Group, home to pterosaur fossils). Together, these routes systematically construct a complete cognitive chain: “from oceanic crust remnants to intracontinental basin, from ancient strata to modern sedimentation, and from the three major rock types to hydrocarbon indicators.”The host institution, the China University of Petroleum-Beijing at Karamay(CUPK), carries forward the university’s profound educational heritage of over 70 years. After more than eight years of development, the campus adheres to the positioning of “rooted in Xinjiang, facing the West, serving the whole country, and radiating to Central Asia,” and pursues the talent cultivation goal of “high-level, application-oriented, and international.” In response to the development needs of the autonomous region’s energy sector and the construction of the “Eight Major Industrial Clusters,” the campus has established disciplines under the “Double First-Class” initiative and programs under the “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program.” Leveraging the paired assistance “19+1” collaborative platform, the campus has comprehensively promoted the development of high-demand specialties in the western region, creating a cluster of advantageous disciplines. At the same time, the campus has established two branch laboratories of national key laboratories and, together with Xinjiang Oilfield, co-founded the Northwest Research Center of the International Joint Laboratory for Unconventional Oil and Gas (Ministry of Education) and the Joint Research Institute of Oil & Gas Resources and Engineering. Furthermore, the campus has deepened school-enterprise cooperation and industry-education integration, implemented the practical teaching concept of “four-year uninterrupted” training in two dimensions, established the Digital and Intelligent Oil & Gas Modern Industry College, and took the lead in founding the Xinjiang New Engineering Education Alliance. It has signed school-enterprise cooperation agreements with more than 20 enterprises, including PetroChina Xinjiang Oilfield Company, Sinopec Northwest Oilfield Company, and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., establishing 61 stable, high-quality enterprise engineering practice platforms. In 2026, the summer camp will, for the first time, achieve a complete closed-loop teaching chain of “field sampling → thin-section preparation → microscopic identification → research paper writing.” Under the guidance of our professors, you will personally collect rock samples in the field, complete thin-section preparation in the on-campus Petroleum College laboratory, observe the microscopic world of minerals using a polarizing microscope, and finally write and present a research report of 4,000–6,000 characters. Outstanding results will be recommended for publication in academic journals or on the campus platform. For university students (undergraduate, master's, doctoral):Strengthen field fundamentals: Under the guidance of senior professors, master standardized methods for profile observation, sample collection, and documentation.Complete a research closed loop: Engage hands-on in the entire process from field sampling to thin-section preparation, microscopic identification, and research paper writing, ultimately producing a high-quality field report.Gain international exchange experience: Work in mixed groups with young scientists from five Central Asian countries, improve English communication skills, and enrich your academic portfolio. For young faculty members: Update teaching content: Bring back complete field teaching resources from the Junggar Basin (routes, samples, thin-section data) that can be directly incorporated into your home institution's fieldwork courses. Expand academic network: Engage in in-depth exchanges with Professor Ji Youliang, Professor Xiao Jianxin, and Professor Zhao Guochun, opening up possibilities for long-term collaboration. For oilfield professionals (geology, exploration, production positions):Enhance lithological identification and reservoir evaluation skills: Get hands-on experience observing the complete sequence from ancient metamorphic rocks to Cenozoic clastic rocks, compare with subsurface cores from oilfields, and strengthen practical skills in core description and sedimentary facies interpretation.Understand basin tectonic evolution and its relationship to hydrocarbon accumulation: Conduct field investigations of unconformities, fault zones, and ophiolite suites, and gain a renewed understanding of how the formation and evolution of the Junggar Basin control hydrocarbon distribution.Face-to-face interaction with university experts: Directly consult senior professors on challenging geological issues encountered in your work and receive professional answers.Obtain a continuing education certificate: Upon completion of the camp, you will be awarded a certificate from China University of Petroleum-Beijing at Karamay (CUPK), which can serve as proof of continuing education hours. After the registration period ends, the university will interview applicants and select outstanding participants to receive first-, second-, and third-class scholarships (covering all or part of the costs for accommodation, transportation, experimental materials, insurance, etc.; international travel expenses are to be borne by the participants themselves). With the full support of the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the campus will create a spectacular geological field camp experience for participants from around the world! Here, the enigmatic Devil's City bears witness to the transformation of Yardang landforms; the magnificently perilous Dushanzi Grand Canyon celebrates the mighty power of the Earth; the scenic Daifusen forest and grassland radiate vibrant vitality; the complete Darbut Ophiolite Suite awaits you to feel the pulse of the ancient Asian Ocean; and exclusive routes such as the Baiyang River Modern Alluvial Fan and the Wuerhe Dinosaur Route (the homeland of pterosaurs) are ready for your exploration. Advanced laboratory platforms are open to you, and seasoned oilfield experts will engage in discussions with you. We look forward to welcoming outstanding partners to join us here! This field camp requires international students to have a certain foundation in geology, and the working language is English. We will provide all participants with comfortable accommodation, convenient transportation, and attentive living support. Geologists from around the world are welcome to join us and experience the spectacular and magnificent geological world together!Registration Time: From now until July 1, 2026Registration Channel:2024592113@cupk.edu.cnRequired Documents: Application form-2026 CUPK International Summer Camp on Chemical Engineering and New Energy In Karamay Learning agreement-2026 CUPK International Summer Camp on Chemical Engineering and New Energy In KaramayContact Number:+86 990 6633711Address:355, Anding Road, Karamay 834000, P.R.
